US Soldier Convicted in Beating of Afghan Detainee

update

A U.S. soldier has been sentenced to four months detention without pay for mistreating an Afghan detainee at a base in southern Uruzgan province.

Military officials say the soldier, who was accused of beating the detainee, was convicted during a court martial on Friday. The soldier also was demoted after being found guilty of maltreatment and conspiracy to maltreat.

A second soldier accused in the incident is scheduled to face a court martial on Monday.

U.S. military personnel have been accused in other instances of Afghan prisoner abuse. But U.S. officials deny widespread mistreatment of those held in military custody.
