Pakistan, Iran Discuss Gas Pipeline Opposed By US

Officials say Pakistani and Iranian energy officials are in talks to begin work on a gas pipeline project that Washington opposes due to Iran's nuclear program.

Pakistan's petroleum secretary Ahmed Waqar is scheduled to discuss the issue Tuesday with Iran's deputy minister for petroleum M.H. Nejad Hosseinian in Islamabad.

The plan to pipe gas from Iran to Pakistan and India had been stalled for about a decade because of India-Pakistan tensions.

However, a thaw in relations in recent years has again brought renewed interest in the pipeline. Pakistan and India held talks about it in December.

Pakistani media report that the energy ministers will also discuss dates for Iran, Pakistan and India to discuss finalizing an agreement on the pipeline.

Some information for this report was provided by AP.
