Doctors: Sedated Sharon Responds to Pain Test

update

Israeli doctors say Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has moved his right arm and leg in response to pain tests as they gradually bring him out of a medically-induced coma.

Dr. Shlomo Mor-Yosef told reporters at Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital that Mr. Sharon's movements became increasingly significant as doctors reduced his anesthesia dosage Monday.

But he added that Mr. Sharon remains sedated and in serious condition. Doctors had kept Mr. Sharon, 77, in a deep state of unconsciousness since he suffered a brain hemorrhage last Wednesday.

Doctors say they are monitoring Mr. Sharon's condition and that it is too early to discuss his brain function.

The doctors have said the Israeli leader's chances of survival are good, but that he will probably not be able to continue as prime minister.
