Military sources in Ivory Coast say unidentified gunmen have attacked two camps at a major military base near Abidjan.
Authorities say the two camps located at Akuedo near the country's economic capital were fired upon by heavy weapons at about six a.m. local time (0600 UTC). Sources say they heard loud gunfire and explosions in the vicinity of the base.
The West African nation has been plagued by an insurgency since 2002 that has left the country divided between rebels in the north and the government in the south.
Charles Konan Banny was installed as Ivory Coast's transitional prime minister last month as part of a United Nations resolution that gives him authority to carry out rebel disarmament and electoral reforms, in hopes of holding new elections by October.
