The cowboy romance "Brokeback Mountain" leads the nominations for the Golden Globe awards, which were announced Tuesday morning in Los Angeles. "Brokeback Mountain" earned seven nominations, making it a top contender as Hollywood begins its annual award season.
Brokeback Mountain is the story of a secretive romance between two cowboys.
Brokeback Mountain is also a nominee for best dramatic picture. Filmed against epic backdrops in Wyoming and Texas, it earned a directing nomination for Ang Lee and acting nominations for star Heath Ledger and supporting actress Michelle Williams.
Other best drama nominees include the murder thriller The Constant Gardener, the mobster story A History of Violence, and Match Point, a tale of infidelity from director Woody Allen.
Good Night, and Good Luck, the story of journalist Edward R. Murrow and Communist-hunting Senator Joseph McCarthy, is also a nominee for best drama picture. George Clooney, who performs in the film, earned a nomination for directing it.
The Golden Globes are given out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and they honor both dramas and comedies in separate categories. The Producers, the film version of a hit Broadway musical, is another top contender, with four nominations, including best comedy.
Mrs. Henderson Presents is also nominee for best comedy or musical, and earned an acting nod for star Judi Dench. She plays a theater impresario in World War II London.
At the early morning announcement, actor Mark Wahlberg named the nominees for best dramatic actor.
"Russell Crowe, Cinderella Man; Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote; Terrence Howard, Hustle and Flow; Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain; David Stathairn, Good Night, and Good Luck," he said. "Best actress nominees for a movie drama include Gwyneth Paltrow for Proof, Charlize Theron for North Country, and Ziyi Zhang for the Japanese-themed Memoirs of a Geisha.
Winners will be announced January 16, and Hollywood will be watching because the Golden Globe results sometimes predict winners at the more prestigious Oscars.
