Peru has filed a complaint alleging that Chile is allowing former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori to coordinate a political comeback from his Santiago jail cell.
Peruvian officials Friday said the Foreign Ministry lodged the complaint in a diplomatic letter, saying it was concerned about visitors Mr. Fujimori has been receiving. The note recognized Mr. Fujimori's right to receive visitors, but said his activities should not disturb Peruvian public order.
Chilean spokesman Osvaldo Puccio said Chile's treatment of Mr. Fujimori was appropriate.
The former president was arrested in Chile last month at Peru's request, after he ended a five-year exile in Japan.
Mr. Fujimori had said he planned to launch a campaign for next year's Peruvian elections.
Peru is seeking Mr. Fujimori's extradition so he can face charges of corruption and of authorizing death squads. He denies the charges, calling them politically motivated.
Mr. Fujimori was president from 1990 to 2000.
