Gabon's President Wins Reelection

Africa's longest serving president, Gabon's Omar Bongo, has won another seven-year term in office.

Election officials in Gabon say final results from Sunday's poll show Mr. Bongo took 79 percent of the vote, comfortably beating four opposition challengers.

The opposition has accused the president and his supporters of questionable campaign practices. Witnesses also complained of problems with voter lists and of incidents of voter fraud on election day.

Analysts had heavily favored Mr. Bongo to win, saying his long domination of Gabonese politics, control of the media, and a weak and divided opposition almost guaranteed him victory.

Mr. Bongo first came to power in 1967. A 2003 constitutional amendment eliminated presidential term limits.
