Kenyan runners have swept the top three places at the Philadelphia Marathon in Pennsylvania.
Joseph Nderitu covered the 42-kilometer course Sunday in 2:21.02. He outdistanced countrymen Joshua Koros by almost two minutes (2:22.52) and another minute ahead of Joseph Kamau (2:23.57). Nderitu, the 2003 race winner, made his move in the 37th kilometer, dropping Koros with a surge that left him in front by 25 seconds at the 39th kilometer mark.
Among the women, Philadelphia resident Emily Kroshus took the title in her first marathon with a time of 2:43.07. Kroshus pulled away from runner-up Larisa Michailova of Russia after 19 kilometers. Kroshus attempted the New York City Marathon last year but didn't finish.
