Japan says its embassy officials in Chile have met with former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori at his detention facility.
The foreign ministry says the officials met Wednesday for about 40 minutes with Mr. Fujimori, who holds Japanese citizenship. They said he expressed satisfaction with his living conditions but is worried about his family.
The former president arrived in Chile early this week and announced that he would stay temporarily as part of a bid to return to Peru and run for president in the 2006 elections. But Chilean authorities arrested him at Peru's request.
Mr. Fujimori is wanted in Peru on charges that include corruption and human rights abuses. He fled Peru in in 2000, after 10 years in office, and has spent the past five years in exile in his parents' native Japan.
