The United Nations International Criminal Court has issued its first-ever arrest warrants for five members of Uganda's shadowy rebel group, the Lord's Resistance Army, LRA.
The head of the U.N. mission in Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, says the warrants went out to the governments of Congo, Uganda and Sudan.
The names of the five rebel group members have not been revealed. But the group's leader, Joseph Kony, and his deputy, Vincent Otti, are believed to be among them.
Last month, Uganda's defense minister said Mr. Otti and 50 rebel fighters had fled southern Sudan and crossed into Congo.
Lord's Resistance Army rebels are notorious for attacking civilians and kidnapping children for use as soldiers or sex slaves. The rebel group has been fighting to overthrow Uganda's government since 1987.
The Hague-based International Criminal Court is charged with prosecuting people for crimes against humanity, genocide, war crimes and acts of aggression.
