A train accident south of New Delhi has left at least 18 people dead and more than 100 injured.
Indian authorities say the death toll is likely to rise because a large number of passengers remain trapped in the tangled wreckage, and 40 of the injured are in critical condition.
The train was traveling from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh state to Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh when it derailed. The engine and six passenger cars tumbled off the tracks.
Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav said the express train was moving at 90 kilometers per hour in an area where the maximum speed should have been 15 kilometers per hour when it left the tracks and hit signaling equipment.
Authorities say they suspect brake failure was involved, since the train raced through a station instead of stopping just before it derailed.
