Chad's government says gunmen from neighboring Sudan have attacked a village in eastern Chad, killing at least 36 people.
A government statement said gunmen on horseback entered the eastern town of Madayun, in the Wadai region, Monday and began killing people and stealing their livestock.
It said Chadian armed forces fought off the attackers, killing eight gunmen and capturing seven others.
Eastern Chad borders Sudan's troubled Darfur region, which has been engulfed by two and a half years of war. The fighting pits rebels against government-backed Arab militia and has sent hundreds of thousands of people fleeing into Chad.
