UN Chief Applauds World Summit, Calls for Action

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has applauded the outcome of this week's global summit and has urged nations to implement the agreements they made.

Mr. Annan told the General Assembly in New York Saturday that the summit achieved progress across a "broader front" than on any other single occasion in the history of the United Nations.

He acknowledged that the summit did not achieve all of its goals, but he commended progress made in areas such as human rights, democracy, fighting poverty, terrorism and disease, and preventing genocide.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also addressed the General Assembly Saturday. She urged member states to move boldly forward with reforming the world body.

Ms. Rice said the organization must be transformed to meet global challenges including terrorism, weapons proliferation and human trafficking.

On Friday, summit participants adopted a declaration with new steps for U.N. reform and fighting poverty - but the agreement fell short of the sweeping changes Mr. Annan wanted.
