Indonesia will deport a Singapore-based terrorism expert because he was conducting research in the troubled province of Maluku without a proper visa.
Rohan Gunaratna was arrested earlier this week in the region, where vicious fighting between Muslims and Christians from 1999 to 2002 killed more than 5,000 people.
Mr. Gunaratna, a Sri Lankan, is the author of the book, Inside al Qaeda: Global Network of Terror. He is a frequent commentator on Islamic militancy and terrorism in Asia.
Police say he was using a tourist visa while doing research in Maluku. They say Mr. Gunaratna will be flown to the capital of Jakarta Friday and then deported.
