Louisiana's governor says troops are on their way to New Orleans to restore order to the city as it slips further into chaos.
In a news conference Thursday, Governor Kathleen Blanco said looting and lawlessness will not be tolerated.
The governor added that authorities have been using force as necessary and strictly enforcing the rule of law.
Governor Blanco says 4,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the New Orleans region, and that a total of 12,000 should be in place by Friday.
She says she has requested uniformed troops of any sort, and has asked for no less than 40,000 military personnel.
Governor Blanco adds that police from other U.S. states are arriving in New Orleans to quell civil unrest.
