The government of Venezuela has offered to send humanitarian aid and fuel to the United States in the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina along the U.S. Gulf Coast.
The Foreign Ministry issued a statement Wednesday, saying Venezuela is ready to send a humanitarian aid task force to assist in relief efforts, if requested by the United States.
Venezuela's Citgo Petroleum Corporation also pledged $1 million towards relief efforts.
Citgo says the funds will be directed to appropriate relief organizations in the affected areas.
Venezuela is the world's fifth largest oil exporter and a major supplier to the United States, although relations have been tense between the two countries.
