President Bush has again vowed to continue efforts to secure democracy and freedom in Iraq.
Mr. Bush made the pledge Tuesday at a Naval base in San Diego, California, as he commemorated the anniversary of the Allied victory over Japan in World War II.
Mr. Bush compared the current war against terrorism to the challenges the Allies faced 60 years ago.
He said the United States is again a nation at war that again faced a surprise attack that killed thousands, references to Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor and the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Japan unconditionally surrendered on August 14, 1945, days after the United States launched nuclear attacks on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Mr. Bush applauded Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebanon for recent free elections, and vowed to continue efforts to defeat the terrorists in Iraq.
Recent opinion polls indicate declining support for the president's policies in Iraq.
