Monsoon Rains Return to Western India as Death Toll Nears 1,000

Authorities in India's financial hub, Mumbai, also known as Bombay, have urged residents to stay at home Sunday as monsoon rains cause more flooding.

Downpours are hampering rescue efforts and the distribution of emergency supplies to needy residents, as the death toll in Bombay and other parts of Maharashtra state nears one thousand.

Train and air services were disrupted, leaving thousands of passengers stranded at railway stations and airports.

Soldiers, police and rescue workers used bulldozers, cranes and their bare hands to move boulders and rubble in a search for survivors and bodies in areas hit by landslides.

Thousands of Bombay residents took to the streets Saturday to protest against power blackouts and an acute shortage of drinking water.
