The date was set Friday after a week of negotiations between majority Republicans and minority Democrats.
President Bush has called for Judge Roberts to be confirmed before the Supreme Court reconvenes in early October. Democrats say they want enough time to adequately review the judge, who has spent the past two years as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington.
The Democrats want the White House to release additional documents from when Judge Roberts worked for the government in the early 1990s as a deputy solicitor general. The White House says the requested documents are off-limits.
If confirmed, Judge Roberts would replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
