Insurgents launched coordinated attacks against Iraqi army checkpoints north of Baghdad Thursday, killing six Iraqi soldiers.
Iraqi officials said gunmen used mortars and automatic weapons in the attacks along a road between Baghdad and Baquba.
In another incident, insurgents ignited a huge fire when they blew up a train carrying fuel in southern Baghdad. At least one person was killed and several others were injured.
And the U.S. military reports its troops have detained 29 suspected terrorists during operations in northern Iraq since Wednesday.
The military also reports that two American soldiers were killed and one injured Wednesday when their patrol struck a roadside bomb in northern Baghdad.
