PM Says Australia Will Not Become Police State

Australian Prime Minister John Howard says new anti-terrorism laws will not turn the country into a police state.

Speaking on Australian television from London Sunday, Mr. Howard said no government is going to turn Australia into a police state in order to guard against terrorism.

The Australian leader proposed strengthening Australia's anti-terrorism laws after meeting with his British counterpart Tony Blair last week.

The two leaders met as London's transport system was targeted by bombers for the second time in two weeks. No one was killed in the latest attempted bombings, two weeks after 56 people died in blasts on London's subway and bus system.
