Philippine President Gloria Arroyo has submitted to the House of Representatives her defense to an impeachment complaint filed against the embattled leader.
Ignacio Bunye, a spokesman for Ms. Arroyo, said Saturday the defense statement is an expression of her willingness to submit to the legal process.
The impeachment complaint is expected to be filed next week in the House. It accuses Ms. Arroyo of cheating, lying and stealing last year's presidential election.
The controversy began when a recording surfaced of a phone call between Ms. Arroyo and an election official. During the call, Ms. Arroyo said she wanted to win the election by a million votes.
Ms. Arroyo has denied any wrongdoing and has refused to step down.
