Football: Panama Wins, Honduras, Trinidad Draw in Gold Cup


Panama defeated Colombia, 1-0 while Trinidad and Tobago played Honduras to a 1-1 draw on the first night of the CONCACAF Gold Cup football (soccer) tournament in Miami, Florida Wednesday.

Luis Tejada scored midway through the second half to give the Panamanians the win and the lead in Group A.

Meanwhile, Christopher Birchall scored for Trinidad and Tobago (27th Minute) while Maynor Figueroa evened the match for Honduras just before half-time in the second game of the night.

The U.S. team opens the tournament Thursday night in Seattle, Washington when it takes on Cuba. Canada plays Costa Rica in the other Group B Game.

Group C play starts Friday in California when title holders Mexico take on South Africa and Guatemala plays Jamaica. Mexico has won the tournament four times while the United States has captured the Gold Cup twice.

The top two teams in each of the three groups of four plus the two best third-place finishers advance to the quarterfinals.
