The rector of the Grand Mosque of Paris, Dalil Boubakeur, has been re-elected as president of the French Council of the Muslim Faith. The council officially represents Islam in relations with government bodies.
France created the council two years ago to form a single point of contact with the Muslim community. Previously, there existed no single channel for communication between the government and French Muslims.
Islam is the second most professed faith in France, behind Roman Catholicism.
In a congratulatory message to Mr. Boubakeur, French President Jacques Chirac praised the council for its spirit of dialog.
Mr. Boubakeur, a moderate, will serve another two year term as president of the council.
