US Releases Half Million Tons of Wheat to Africa

The United States is releasing up to 500,000 tons of wheat to African countries facing food shortages, with special attention to Ethiopia and Eritrea.

In a statement Wednesday, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns said he is pleased that his department can provide the aid.

Earlier this month, President Bush pledged to provide an extra $674 million worth of humanitarian aid to Africa. He said $414 million of the sum will be provided immediately to avert famine.

In its statement, the Agriculture Department said the aid, will feed more than 14 million people in Ethiopia and Eritrea.
