The 24th seed, Taylor Dent of the United States, beat countryman Kevin Kim, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. The 23rd seed, 2003 French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain, needed five sets to beat Lee Hyung-taik of South Korea, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
On the women's side, former world number one Kim Clijsters of Belgium and 2004 French Open winner Anastasia Myskina of Russia scored second-round wins.
Clijsters, the 15th seed, defeated American Marissa Irvin, 6-1, 6-1. Ninth-seeded Myskina ousted Japan's Aiko Nakamura (6-4, 6-3).
In other women's matches, number-three seed Amelie Mauresmo of France beat Maria Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain, 6-1, 6-3, and 13th-seed Elena Likhovtseva of Russia beat Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States, 6-3, 7-6.
