The fourth-seeded Gasquet beat fifth seed Taylor Dent of the United States in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Mirnyi, seeded eighth, also won in straight sets, but he had a more difficult time. He beat seventh-seeded Olivier Rochus of Belgium, 6-4, 7-5.
