The International Criminal Court at The Hague is expected to launch a formal investigation into possible war crimes in Sudan's western Darfur region.
Sources familiar with the case say prosecutors plan to announce details of the probe Monday. The inquiry is expected to be the biggest investigation in the ICC's nearly three-year history.
Officials at the United Nations have said 180,000 people in Darfur have been killed in more than two years of fighting between rebel groups and government-backed Arab militias, known as the Janjaweed. Two-million other people have been displaced in the conflict.
The United Nations referred the case to the ICC after the United States, which opposes the court, backed away from using its veto in the U.N. Security Council.
