Hezbollah, Amal Get Clean Sweep in Lebanon Vote

Lebanon papers reflect on Hezbollah victories in southern Lebanon
Lebanese officials say the Hezbollah and Amal movements, both pro-Syrian, have won all 23 parliamentary seats contested in southern Lebanon in Sunday's second stage of staggered elections.

Interior Minister Hassan al-Sabaa announced the official results Monday.

After polls closed Sunday, both groups declared victory and their supporters poured into the streets of Lebanese towns and cities in celebration.

The previous Sunday, an anti-Syrian slate headed by Saad Hariri, the son of assassinated former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, swept to victory in Sunni-dominated Beirut.

The four-stage vote by region ending June 19 comes four months after Rafik Hariri's assassination, which triggered protests that forced the Beirut government to quit. Syrian troops also pulled out of the country after a 29-year presence.

Since then, Washington and the United Nations have renewed calls for anti-Israeli Hezbollah militants to disarm. Hezbollah says it has no intention of doing so.
