Laura Bush touches the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City |
U.S. first lady Laura Bush was heckled by protesters as she visited two holy sites in Jerusalem.
At the Western Wall, Jewish demonstrators shouted for the release of American Jonathan Pollard, who is serving a life sentence in the United States for spying for Israel.
Next, Mrs. Bush went to the Dome of the Rock mosque. As she entered and exited the mosque, some Muslim worshipers shouted their disapproval of her presence. Israeli police linked arms to clear a path to her motorcade.
Mrs. Bush said the experience showed her "what an emotional place" each holy site is. She added that "what we all want is peace."
Later in the day, Mrs. Bush met with a group of Palestinian women in Jericho. She is expected to visit a Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem before traveling to Egypt.
