Pakistan Arrests 2 Suspects in Alleged Plot to Kidnap Lawmakers

Pakistani police have arrested two Sunni Muslim militants suspected in several attacks and plots, including one against the Pakistani parliament.

Police officials say both men, arrested in the eastern city of Multan, are members of an outlawed extremist group blamed for killing hundreds of Shi'ite Muslims.

A police spokesman said one of the men was planning an attack on the Pakistani parliament, hoping to capture lawmakers and use them to bargain for the release of jailed associates.

The suspects also allegedly planned to kill a prominent Shi'ite leader at a religious rally last December, but called off the strike.

The two were also wanted in an attack on a Shi'ite mosque last year that killed 30 people.
