OAS Proposes Commission to Consider Case of Former Haitian PM

The Organization of American States is calling for the creation of a special commission to review the case of jailed former Haitian Prime Minister Yvon Neptune, who has been on a hunger strike for just over two weeks.

In a statement late Wednesday, OAS Acting Secretary-General Luigi Einaudi suggested that the commission should be made up of a Haitian jurist, an international jurist and an international forensics expert.

Mr. Neptune has been refusing food to protest his detention in connection with political killings during last year's rebellion that ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

The acting OAS secretary-general says the hunger strike has left Mr. Neptune in a dangerously weak condition.
