Red Cross: 15 Killed in Ivory Coast Ethnic Clashes

update

The International Committee of the Red Cross says 15 people have died in ethnic clashes around the western Ivory Coast town of Duekoue.

The agency says at least 6,000 people have fled last week's violence between between indigenous tribes and migrant farm workers. The mayor of Duekoue told Reuters news agency that U.N. soldiers are patrolling the town and surrounding villages. He said shops have reopened and public transportation is resuming.

Ethnic tension is common in the region, but it has been exacerbated by Ivory Coast's civil war which started in 2002. The country remains divided between the rebel-held north, and the government-controlled south.
