Speaking on the Cable News Network, 37-year-old Saad Hariri said he intends to prove himself and to work hard to achieve his father's goal of a free and sovereign Lebanon. Mr. Hariri also called for international observers to monitor the upcoming polls.
Hours after the February 14 assassination of Rafik Hariri, opposition leaders blamed the Beirut government and its Syrian sponsors for the death. Despite denials from both governments, hundreds of thousands of protesters demanded that all Syrian forces in Lebanon leave the country.
Sunday, the last of Syria's 14,000 troops were reported dismantling military posts in Lebanon, before heading home. The last Syrian troops are to leave Tuesday.
