UN Report: Afghan Opium Cultivation Falls

update

A United Nations report finds that opium production in most of Afghanistan's main growing regions has declined since the government started a campaign against narcotics.

Afghanistan's Counter Narcotics Minister, Habibullah Qaderi, says the survey found a falling trend of opium cultivation in a majority of provinces, notably in the main poppy-growing provinces such as Nangarhar, Helmand and Uruzgan.

Last month, President Hamid Karzai presented an eight-point plan to eradicate poppy production.

The United States and Britain have pledged hundreds of millions of dollars to fight drug production in Afghanistan, which is the world's largest opium producer.

Some information for this report provided by AP, AFP, and Reuters.
