Olympic organizers in Beijing are drawing from the experience of previous host cities, including some in the United States, to help secure the 2008 Summer Games.
The capital city already has tight security in order to prevent any public dissent against the government's communist rule. The measures will be increased substantially to prevent terror attacks during the Olympics. Paramilitary troops, electronic surveillance and even city workers and mass transit operators will be involved.
The Chinese government considers the Olympics an event of enormous national pride, and plans to adopt some of the elaborate security tactics used last year at the Athens Olympics. Beijing organizers are especially interested in the vast computer surveillance network used in Athens with thousands of hidden cameras and microphones that analyzed dozens of languages.
