Top-seed Lindsay Davenport of the United States and Spanish wildcard Conchita Martinez have advanced to a quarterfinal showdown at the Dubai Duty Free Women's Open tennis tournament in the United Arab Emirates.
Davenport defeated China's Zheng Jie in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. Martinez defeated seventh-seeded Nathalie Dechy of France, 6-1, 6-2.
French Open women's tennis champion Anastasia Myskina of Russia advanced when her opponent, Marion Bartoli of France, retired with a left knee injury. Myskina next meets Switzerland's Patty Schnyder, a straight-set winner over China's Li Na, 6-3, 7-6.
Meanwhile, American Serena Williams reached the quarterfinals with a three-set win over Russian Elena Bovina, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. In the final eight, Williams takes on Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, who beat Elena Likhovtseva of Russia, 7-5, 6-4. The other quarterfinal has India's Sania Mirza taking on Jelena Jankovic of Serbia-Montenegro.
