A Bosnian Serb general accused of involvement in the 1995 massacres of thousands of Muslims says he will prove his innocence before the United Nations war crimes tribunal.
General Milan Gvero pleaded not guilty Wednesday in The Hague to five counts of crimes against humanity, including murder, persecution and deportation. He said he did not kill so much as a sparrow during the conflict of the early 1990s in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The charges involve the deaths of more than 7,000 people following the Serb capture of the Muslim enclaves of Srebrenica and Zepa.
Another suspect named in the same indictment, General Radivoje Miletic, postponed entering a plea for up to 30 days. Both he and General Gvero turned themselves in to the court in the past week.
The third suspect named in the indictment, Zdravko Tolimir, is still at large.
