The U.S. Geological Survey has reported a 7.1 magnitude earthquake some 300 kilometers off the coast of eastern Indonesia.
Geologists say the quake is unlikely to cause a tsunami.
There were no reports of casualties or damage, but the French news agency, AFP, says the Wednesday evening quake sparked panic among residents in several Indonesian provinces. People in Australia also reported feeling tremors.
Recovery workers in Indonesia are still pulling bodies from the rubble of cities devastated by the December 26 earthquake and tsunami. Jakarta's official death count widely varies, but well over 100,000 people in Indonesia are believed to have died in the disaster.
