Philippines Troops Kill Three Communist Rebels in South

Philippines officials say fighting between government troops and communist guerrillas has left three guerrillas dead.

Military officials say the rebels were among a group of 10 that government troops encountered near the town of Kiblawan on Tuesday. One communist rebel was wounded and captured during the fighting.

Tuesday's incident followed a violent clash last Saturday in the southern Philippines that left 14 guerrillas and two soldiers dead.

The rebels are members of the New People's Army, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, which has been labeled a terrorist group by the United States.

Peace talks between the government and the rebels broke down last year. The insurgents say Manila has refused to convince the U.S. to remove it from the terror list.
