Forty Shades of Blue won the American dramatic grand jury prize, while Why We Fight was chosen as the top documentary Saturday at the annual showcase for independent film held in Park City in the western U.S. state of Utah.
International films were given awards for the first time since the initial festival in 1987. The Hero, a joint Angolan, Portuguese and French production, won the world dramatic grand jury prize, while Shape of the Moon from the Netherlands earned top documentary honors.
Audience Awards from ballots cast by Sundance Festival filmgoers for top American films went to the rap-music inspired Hustle and Flow in the dramatic category, and Murderball, which profiles a group of wheelchair-bound athletes, won for favorite documentary.
World cinema Audience Awards went to Denmark-produced Brothers, a tale of two brothers affected when one is deployed to the U.N. mission in Afghanistan for drama, and Canada's Shake Hands with the Devil, the real-life story of the Canadian general who commanded the U.N. peacekeeping force during the 1995 Rwandan genocide for top documentary.
