Aceh Peace Talks to Finish Early

A spokesman for peace talks in Finland between Indonesia's government and Aceh rebels says the Helsinki summit will end a day early.

Senior government officials and rebel leaders met Friday but confined their discussions to relief operations in tsunami-ravaged Aceh province.

Mediators had hoped the two sides would also discuss resolving their nearly three decades of conflict.

A Finnish spokesman for the talks says the two sides will hold a news conference later Saturday. The talks had been expected to end on Sunday.

Aceh rebels have been fighting for independence since 1976.

Talks between the two sides broke down in 2003, but they agreed to a new meeting after the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster sparked an international relief effort in the region.
