The Bush administration is expected to seek $80 billion in new funding for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan this year.
The funding would bring the total for military operations in the two countries to almost $300 billion so far.
The funding request is expected to be formally submitted to Congress after President Bush sends up his budget for fiscal year 2006 in early February.
Administration and congressional aides say the supplemental request is expected to include $1 billion to $2 billion for building a U.S. embassy in Baghdad. It may also include aid to support new Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Ukraine's new President Viktor Yushchenko.
Some members of Congress have criticized the Bush administration for underestimating the cost of the Iraq war. House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi (D-California) said Democrats would ask questions about the costs and why Iraqi troops are not playing a larger role in security.
