German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has expressed shame for the millions of people murdered by the Nazis during World War II.
Mr. Schroeder Tuesday told a somber Berlin meeting marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp his country has a moral duty to remember the atrocities committed during the Nazi era. He said the events of the war and Germany's role in it will never be forgotten.
Government leaders across Europe marked the anniversary with warnings that the battle against anti-Semitism has not yet been won.
French President Jacques Chirac inaugurated a new Holocaust memorial in Paris, and called anti-Semitism a perversion that will not be tolerated in France.
World leaders will gather at the Auschwitz death camp in Poland Thursday to pay tribute to those killed there by the Nazis. The victims include more than one million Jews.
