The Australian government says one of its two citizens being held as terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba will be released soon and sent back home.
Australian Attorney General Philip Ruddock announced Tuesday that Egyptian-born Mamdouh Habib will be returned to Australia without being charged. Mr. Ruddock says it is also unlikely Mr. Habib will be charged with any offense in Australia.
Mr. Habib was arrested in Pakistan shortly after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The Australian national says he was taken from Pakistan to Egypt and tortured there before being sent to Guantanamo. The U.S. says it believes Mr. Habib had prior knowledge of the attacks.
Another Australian terror suspect, David Hicks, is also being held at Guantanamo Bay. He is scheduled to face trial by a military tribunal in March.
