The official U.S. death toll from last week's Asian tsunami has risen to 36.
The revised figure includes 16 Americans confirmed dead and 20 others that a State Department spokesman says are now presumed dead.
The spokesman says officials have specific reason to believe those 20 Americans were in harm's way when the tsunami struck. He says 19 were in Thailand and the 20th in Sri Lanka.
The spokesman says U.S. officials are still looking into 3,500 inquiries about the welfare of Americans still unaccounted for.
He says the State Department has received 24,000 inquiries overall, most of which were resolved when people were found or officials realized there were multiple calls about the same person.
U.S. officials continue to work with travel, embassy, and Asian immigration officials to locate the missing Americans.
