Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Iran to Build Trans-Afghan Corridor

Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Iran have agreed to join forces and build a trans-Afghan transport corridor that will give Uzbekistan access to the Persian Gulf.

An Uzbek Foreign Ministry statement says officials from the three countries signed an agreement to set up the Interstate Coordination Council after Wednesday's talks in Tashkent.

The statement says the document will serve as a legal basis to develop the 2,400-kilometer interstate road, linking the former Soviet republic with Iran's Gulf coast through Afghanistan.

The Foreign Ministry gave no details on how much the project would cost or when the work will begin.
