President of Niger Wins Reelection

Final results show the president of Niger, Tandja Mamadou, has won a second five-year term in office.

Niger's electoral commission said Tuesday that President Tandja won 65.5 percent of the vote in the run-off balloting on Saturday.

It says opposition candidate Mahamadou Issoufou received 34.5 percent of the vote.

President Tandja had been heavily favored to win a new term after four opponents who lost in the first round decided to back him.

The president is the first elected leader of Niger to complete a five-year term without being assassinated or deposed in a coup.

Results from the Niger's parliamentary elections, also held Sarturday, have not been announced.
