MLB: Expos Move to Washington Subject to Stadium Agreement

Major League Baseball team owners have approved the Montreal Expos move to Washington next year, but the deal is still subject to a stadium agreement.

The 29-1 vote by the baseball owners is subject to Washington officials enacting a funding plan for a new ballpark by the end of this year. The City Council voted earlier this week to approve the new ballpark, but put a $630 million cap on the deal.

If everything is approved, the Washington Nationals would begin play against the Philadelphia Phillies on April 4. The home opener would be April 14 against Arizona at Robert F. Kennedy stadium. RFK, the home field of Major League Soccer's DC United club, would house the Nationals for three seasons until the new ballpark opens.

The move is the first time a Major League Baseball team has changed cities since the 1971 season when the Washington Senators team moved to Texas and became the Texas Rangers.
