After Suspension, Voting Under Way in Warri, Nigeria

Nigerian officials say voting is under way in the oil-rich city of Warri, eight months after the poll was suspended amid fears of violence.

Nigeria's military has sent troops to the region to ensure order during Thursday's election for three municipal offices.

Witnesses said there was no sign of voting at designated polling stations in the city. Election officials, however, said they had received no reports of problems.

Some members of the ethnic Ijaw community accused the ruling People's Democratic Party of rigging the outcome ahead of the vote.

Nigeria held local elections across the country last March, but voting in Warri was suspended due to violent rivalry between Ijaw and Itsekiri militias over control of the region's oil wealth.
